This is about the time that you finish using the VGC 2016 format, because soon is the Pokemon Nationals. Some countries already have done their Nationals, and some haven't. To those who already finished, keep your fingers crossed; you just might get into Worlds. For those who are still yet to play in Nationals, good luck!
Restricted Pokemon may go down for a while, but it will definitely come back. But the main worry now is the VGC 2017 season. We all probably know by now that the Alola region (from Sun and Moon, the newest Pokemon games,) will be included, but will the Hoenn region and Kalos region still work? But, what will the main trend be in the VGC '17 season's Autumn Regionals? Will Solgaleo and Lunala (the Sun/Moon Box Legendaries [the ones on the box you buy]) play Restricted? And if trends change, what may happen to Mega Kangaskhan, Landorus-Therian, and Thundurus? These are questions we're all asking ourselves (well, probably, among other questions), but don't know answers for.
Truthfully, I think the 2017 season must have ΩRɑS (Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire) because Sun/Moon is coming out in November, and Autumn Regionals will happen around August, September, or October. As of Kangashkhan, Landorus, and Thundurus, I think they probably will fade out late into the VGC 2017 season.
TCG players will get the same fate. This season, TCG players got the best landmarks for cards; B+W and up for Expanded, and XY and up for Standard. VG players got Restricted Pokemon (in a nutshell, OP Pokemon who are rarely allowed). For TCG players, the biggest losses are probably the Oblivion Wing Yveltal and Geomancy Xerneas. Some Megas will also fall into the "Expanded Pit". For me, Krookodile-EX is also a hard hit, knowing it could deal massive damage to opposing Pokemon, with the Megaton Fang-Second Bite hit. Greninja and Greninja-EX are also hard losses for me. (Too much about ME! Sorry.) For other players, it may be Yveltal- or Xerneas-EX. Other countless strategies will also fall.
As this is my 10th post (Yay.), I thought I'd give some 2017 strategies. So... here they are.
